LUNCH & LEARN
THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24 12-2PM
Local Materials
Ole Sondresen, Ole Sondresen Architect
Using his design for Bird, the first retail store in New York City to receive Gold LEED Certification and winner of the Green Apple award from the National Resources Defense Council, as a case study and jumping off point, Ole Sondresen discusses using locally sourced, made, reclaimed, reused or recycled materials in the built environment.
Born and raised in southern Norway, Ole Sondresen discovered his passion for carpentry and craftsmanship in his father's woodworking shop. Having worked in sawmills and construction while studying the fine arts, his design process as a practicing architect is greatly influenced by the possibilities in material composition, detailing and assembly.
THURSDAY, October 8 12-2PM
Daily Sustainability
Matthew Morris, Deep Green Living
Stressing the importance of basing individual daily decisions in sustainability, Matthew Morris points out the numerous opportunities available to green home and office daily habits. He offers resources, tips and reminders on incorporating these habits into well-designed environments to achieve a more energy-efficient, healthier and less wasteful lifestyle.
Growing up on a farm in an environmentally-sensitive area of coastal Maryland, Matthew understood the principle of environmental stewardship from an early age. Drawing upon his education in architecture and urban studies, he offers expertise in green building technologies, green living practices and sustainable design on projects.
Thursday, December 10 12-2PM
Engineering Sustainable Design
John Anderson, Robert Silman & Associates
Highlighting opportunities for engineers and architects to positively impact the environment, John Anderson presents a life cycle inventory analysis of alternative design strategies, including material selection, recycling or reusing a structure, maximizing material efficiency, thermal mass effects and future adaptability, that can be implemented to minimize carbon emissions from the built environment.
As a structural engineer interested in sustainable design, John Anderson was awarded the Anton Tedesko Fellowship to research the role of the structural engineer in green building. He has also researched the relationship between engineering and architecture as it relates to green building practices, as well as low carbon cement alternatives, the chemical resistance of concrete and sustainable building materials.
